India: Symbol of Unity in Diversity
"India offers unity in diversity. This is the motto of Indian life and culture. There is geographical diversity in our country's mountains in the extreme north, Gangetic plains, Deccan Plateau and the desert of Thar. There is the highest rain in Meghalaya but in the desert of Thar in Rajasthan, the rainfall is very low.
Various kinds of people live in India with different kinds of language, religion, culture, manners, dress and food habits. India has twenty-four states and some union territories. More than 90 crores of people live in India. They speak in different languages, they belong to different castes, and they believe in different creeds and religions. They wear different types of clothes, they take different types of food.
In spite of these differences, there is an undercurrent of unity through common joys and sorrows, struggles. Our first identity is that we are Indians. Then we are Bengalees, Panjabis, Marathi, Orias, Assamese and Biharies etc. But unfortunately the idea! of Unity in diversity is at stake now. India, our motherland, is a large country having the Himalayas in the north, the Kanyakumari in the south, Pakistan in the west and Bangladesh in the east. At the time of national pride and festivals we all, irrespective of caste and creed, feel common joys. In the distress caused by any natural calamity, we all stand by the distressed people and feel their sorrows at heart. We struggle for the common cause of the country unitedly. At present some narrow-minded opportunist leaders being communal and provincial in attitude are adding fuel to communalism and provincialism. The secessionist movement on the basis of religion in Punjab and Kashmir is a great threat to our national integration. We should make our people aware of the necessity and importance of national integration. Some positive measures should be taken, not merely lip-service for integration. Secular teaching should be imparted in the curriculum in schools and colleges.
